adidas Originals and Jonah Hill, united by the Superstar

Jonah Hill's first collaboration with adidas wasn’t about a sneaker. Surprisingly enough, the first encounter was on the set of a short film in which Jonah made the adidas Superstar a driving force for change, but it was also a demonstration that there is no one single path. And he did so, as we might expect, in a teenage setting where nostalgia made it possible to create something new. That first video collaboration featured Chris Severn, the creator of the adidas Superstar, half a century ago, but it was skateboarder Jenn Soto, a newcomer to adidas, who led the story.

The creative history of Jonah Hill

A fruitful combination - for those who know Jonah Hill’s creative history - in which experiences, influences and inspirations act as references to aid in the development of new ideas. This was the case in Mid90s, a debut composition in which nostalgia is just one layer of the story, perhaps the most visible, but underneath the surface there is much more. A not so casual approach to creation, which heavily features in every work by Jonah Hill.

The most recent example is Hill’s first sneaker with adidas - a Superstar silhouette that while celebrating a half a century since its birth, simultaneously explores a connection with the West Coast of the nineties, where Hill grew up (it’s no coincidence that Na-Kel Smith wears them in Mid90s).

The Californian actor and director that became a street style icon

The creative process stems from an organic link to his memories. “I started thinking back to all the experiences I had growing up while wearing them, and tried to make my fantasy version of what I would have wanted when I first wore them” -a combination of sophisticated lines and some of the DIY spirit.

Jonah Hill adds the word “Superstar” and his initials “JH” to the clean-cut, leather silhouette, as well as an embroidered lion on the tongue, a nod to his tattoos. The advanced design details are highlighted on the elements that best define the Superstar: the Shell toe box, blurring its unmistakable markings and three stripes with invisible seams. And, seams that appear on the shoelaces, wider than usual, as an homage to skateboarding and hip hop.
