The second drop in Nike’s “Team Tones” pack revives one of the colors originally created for one of history’s most celebrated college basketball teams.
The “Team Tones” pack recovers the school colors of some of the greatest teams related to the Nike Dunk. with this second drop focusing on one of the teams from the original campaign, St. Johns, who between 1985 and 1986, featured Chris Mullin, Walter Berry, Bill Wennington, Mark Jackson and Shelton Jones. Players whose names would later go on to be notable in the history of the NBA, whether for their game, or for their impact in the media (Jones for his slam dunks and Wellington for his three NBA Championship rings with Jordan’s Bulls).
When Nike started to get involved with college basketball, St. John’s was one of twelve teams to come up with player-specific Dunk colorways, which were quickly adopted by fans. It is a team that will always be remembered for its victory in the Big East, but also for its influence on the game in New York.
The many iterations of the Nike Dunk, which has seen its way through skateboarding and limited edition releases, had its start in college basketball and this white / University red color combination has only ever returned to celebrate its anniversaries.
The Nike Dunk Low SP “University Red” in its original colorway makes a comeback as a special, limited edition. Available June 12th.
